Al and Belle150 viewsThis was taken by Bob Ryan in 1991, near the final days and when both were living at least part time in the store, probably sleeping on cots in the upstairs. Note the accumulations of boxes. The demolition crew would haul away four dumpsters of trash in 1994 when the place closed for good.

Twin Drive-In104 viewsThis is the original Twin Drive-In sign used throughout it's history. Another larger sign was erected later in the 60s. This is the only color version of this sign I know to exist. (I'd to have other pictures of the drive-in for references for a computer rendering in the future)!

1972 shot I took591 viewsSignage looking West. Until 2008, this image had only been printed on a contact sheet. Note the trash strewn about the fence area. Back then litter was common all over. The TV series Madmen on the AMC channel poked fun at people's tendency to litter in the 1960s.

Car dealer where Al Green's once stood372 viewsHere's where Al Green's used to be. This car dealership looks the same as every other one in the area, which used to be one of the city's main car dealer locations. Imagine the Al Green's sign poking through this relatively dull landscape, standing out like a sore thumb amid all the parking lots and pedestrian-hostile streetscapes.

Irvington vignettes460 viewsA composite sketch of Irvington including Al Greens and other popular spots. This was given to my stepmother by her sister, both of whom who grew up in Irvington in the 40s-50s. Susie Parker Jones, the artist, passed away in 2009 from lung cancer.

Tee Pee menu399 viewsThe Tee Pee was incredibly popular even into the 1980s as I recall, probably due to its prime location near the Fairgrounds. My sister was a waitress there during the early 70s for a few years. She told me lots of stories about the dreamers and schemers who used to hang out there.

Bob Ryan posing with the Greens174 viewsNote the tan color of the building. The Gary Brewer video shot in 1994 before demolition shows a pink building. Tan is more likely the color used for most of its history.

124 viewsSign shot by Jack Varry, 1994. Note how empty the building looks, cleaned out by the salvage crew, ready for the wrecking ball. We don't know if the tunnels were filled or merely covered over.Jan 21, 2010
